Center For Neighborhoods has decided to reopen the Request for Proposals for the PAINT project in the Breckenridge Estates Neighborhood. TARC (Transit Authority of River City) has provided additional funding for this project creating a total budget of $17,500. Since TARC has generously helped to fund this PAINT project, it must somehow incorporate the neighborhood bus stop(s). Please feel free to forward this email to anyone that you think would be interested in developing a proposal.

Focused on a Neighborhood - A district or locality, often with reference to its character or inhabitants, a political ward or precinct. The concept of a neighborhood includes geographic, social, cultural, civic, economic, and historical components.
Participatory - Marked by, requiring, or involving participation, especially affording the opportunity for individual participation.
Public - Open to the view of all; existing or conducted in public.

Brief History of the Neighborhood

A brief history of Breckenridge Estates from residents Carole and Charlie Freville.

Our BENA Neighborhood
When we moved into this house some forty years ago, the neighborhood looked quite
different from today's suburban sprawl.

Six Mile Lane was a small country road with very few houses on it. At the comer of
Manner Dale and Six Mile Lane was a stone house, nestled on several acres of plowed
land. Spearmint plants could be seen (and smelled) every spring, covering those acres.

The days they harvested the mint plants, the scents were intoxicating!

The mint was sold to Churchill Downs for the 'world famous' mint juleps at the Derby.

This area is now the site of Manner Pointe Patio Homes and the Hunsinger Lane Baptist
Church.

A block down Six Mile Lane, just before the railroad tracks, was another farm. Every
fall its acreage was covered in pumpkins. Our children loved going over there to pick
pumpkins. They saved their quarters so they could buy more than one. We always had
a dozen pumpkins to carve.

The railroad tracks had no gates then. The bell would frequently get stuck and ring all
night. We would call Southern Railroads to turn it off. The railroad was of large interest,
especially when the steam engines would charge through.

Just beyond the tracks was a farm that planted strawberries every spring. There was a
U-pick business on this farm. We enjoyed watching out our back windows as they
plowed and planted. Then in June, we could walk over and pick their delicious produce.

This is now the site of Westwood Farms. The homestead for this farm still stands today.
It is a large manor-type house with a long driveway, enclosed with trees that bloom in the
spring. In the early days, there were several out buildings and my children were
convinced that they were former slave cabins. Today, the driveway is shorter and
empties into Westwood Farms.

Across from our Welcome Wall on Breckridge Lane and backing up to the curve of
Hunsinger Lane was a large red barn where horses were boarded. Our children often rode
one of our neighbor's horses there. A horse broke out late one evening and was killed by
a car on Breckenridge Lane. That is now the site of Kort Springs.

When we moved in, there were no houses past the first block on Colson Dr.
We thought we were living in the country. But progress was rapid and we quickly had
many new neighbors. Over the years, traffic and noise has increased but it has brought
along the friends and neighbors who are the multicultural faces of this neighborhood.

Neighborhood Institute began in 1987 with a class of 16 neighborhood leaders conducted at Walnut Street Baptist Church. Since then, the NI has graduated over 900 people from all 26 Metro Council districts and So. Indiana. The Neighborhood Institute continues its purpose to equip neighborhood leaders with skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood groups, small cities, condo and homeowner associations.

Congratulations! Neighborhood Institute graduates have been vital to making Louisville the City of Neighborhoods.

Your neighborhood booth at the Grassroots Gala can highlight your neighborhood in any manner your members feel appropriate. Be creative! Each booth space consist of an eight foot table and two chairs.

Sell neighborhood merchandise or membership
Partner with a neighborhood business to give away samples or baubles

We have a variety of fun opportunities and all Naturalists are trained in their area of interest. New Albany Public Art Project:

The Carnegie Center for Art & History and the New Albany Urban Enterprise Association

are accepting proposals from artists for the

2012 New Albany Public Art Project:

Bicentennial Series.

The submission deadline is January 3, 2012!

Each selected artist or artist team will receive an honorarium of $4,000. Three artists or teams will be selected from the proposals to create outdoor artworks that will be installed in the Spring of 2012 to remain on view for two years.

Each selected artwork will interpret one of the following historic themes: Education, Neighborhoods & Architecture, Parks & Recreation or Transportation. Attention must be paid to this aspect of the project, as interpretation of the chosen theme and historical appropriateness will be a factor in the selection process. While artists must interpret the theme in a way that is accurate to that history, we are not looking for literal displays of the theme, but rather unique and innovative interpretations of one or more aspects of the theme.

Hands On History Workshop Series

Hands on History

2011-2012 Schedule

Preservation Louisville announces the 2011-2012 schedule for its popular workshop series Hands on History. Throughout the series, participants will learn practical, hands-on techniques for working with original materials and finishes to maintain, restore and preserve historic elements such as plaster, windows, and gutters. Adapting "green" concepts for historic structures and winterizing your historic home will also be explored.

Workshops will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 1-4 pm, September through April. The registration fee is $20 for Preservation Louisville Members or $30 for non members.
