Neighborhood Institute • Summer 2011
Educating Our Students/Parental Involvement

This is a 12 week course, with dinner (FREE) served each class.

This Neighborhood Institute will focus on educational achievement and educational equity. It will be designed with the flexibility to meet the unique goals of the class participants. Issues of greatest concern and interest to perspective participants will be used to develop the curriculum through core topics that reflect these areas of concern. Advice of professional educators, parents and research on best practices will be woven into this core training.

Attendance is encouraged and expected at ALL sessions due to the variety
of the following topics covered on a weekly basis.
• Implement your project ideas
• Twelve weeks of fun with peers
• Dialogue with JCPS
• Parental information exchange
• Networking
• Experiential learning
• Group problem solving
• Conflict resolution


Purpose of Neighborhood Institute
• Explore roles of parents/guardians as advocates in the school system
• Parents partner with other parents for encouragement and leadership
• Community, school, and parent partnerships
• Review student achievement data and information
• Cultural sensitivity dialogues
• Build individual and community assets
• Consensus-building and problem solving
• Passions developed through projects

This class will be fun, interactive, and you will meet friends sharing similar concerns.
