Get Involved - Community Build in Parkland 


The Parkland Boys & Girls Club will soon have a one-of-a-kind playground and community garden thanks to The Humana Foundation and KaBoom!, a national non-profit dedicated to saving play.  This customized playground will be funded primarily by The Humana Foundaiton and will be created with personal drawings and other input from local community members - from children to seniors - collected during the Design Day on August 15th.  
 
Volunteer Opportunities
Prep Days:
  • Saturday, October 13th and                           Monday, October 15th 
  •  
    8:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Breakfast & Lunch & snacks provided
Have special skills building or experience working with power tools? We need your help in prepping before the playground is built. Please note that we are asking volunteers that help out on a prep day to commit to volunteer on Build Day
!   
  
Build Day:
  • Tuesday, October 16th
  • 8:00 am to 5:00 pm  
  • Breakfast & Lunch & snacks provided
We are in need of 125 individuals to help on Build Day! There is an opportunity to volunteer for everyone - handing out food, manning first aide station, working registration, or building the playground!

Saturday, September 15th:
  • Roots Fest irish hill, Gary's on Spring St., 204 S. Spring St., 11 am - 4 pm. Live local music featuring, Appalatin (2:30 pm), local Art & Craft booths, Kids Craft Tent, delicious food from Gary's on Spring, Four Roses Bourbon Tasting & craft beer. Bring your lawn chair.   • Green Fair, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 2000 Douglass Boulevard, 9 am - 1 pm. Offering opportunities for recycling of all e-wastes and document shredding, as well as exhibits and a presentation by Kentucky Interfaith Power and Light, which is co-sponsoring the fair. 
  • Downtown Living Tour, 10 am - 3 pm. The tour will showcase 13 locations, including condos, apartments and lofts. Free shuttle transportation will be provided and participants are encouraged to check-in at the lobby of the Brown & Williamson Tower, located at the corner of 4th and Liberty Streets. Tuesday, September 18th:
Idea Festival WATER,
Kentucky Center for the Arts, 9 am - 3 pm.  Presenters include Gill Holland, Mark Hogg, Greg Heitzman , Megan Casey, Gregory Luham and Steven Greseth.  Seating is limited, purchase tickets today - $40 for adults and $15 for students - price includes lunch.

Voter Registration Deadline Quickly Approaching
  

As the November 6th election approaches, so is the deadline to register. 

If you are a new voter, have recently moved or had a name change you must submit a new registration card no later than the close of business on October 9thClick here to download the registration form, print it off, fill it out and return it to the Jefferson County Election Center.  The form can dropped off or mailed to:

To vote you must be a United States citizen, 18 years or older and you may not be a convicted felon.  Click here for more information about eligibility and precinct locations.

Absentee Voting Starts September 24th
Registered voters who will miss the general election on November 6th may begin voting on September 24th at the election center (810 Barret Ave).  Jefferson County in-house voting will be held in Room 103 of the government center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  There are also three Saturday options from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on October 20th, October 27th and November 3rd. If you would rather complete a mail-in ballot you can request one here.

You must qualify to vote early.  The following are some examples of eligible reasons to vote absentee:
  • You are outside the county on Election Day  
  • You are a student who's temporarily residing outside of the county in which you are registered to vote  
  • You are a member of the Armed Forces, or a dependent, and will be out of the county  
  • You or a spouse are having surgery that will require hospitalization  
  • You are a precinct election officer serving in a precinct other than your own  
  • You are in your last trimester of pregnancy
