Dear Neighbors:
The Belknap Neighborhood Association is writing to request your help to oppose the proposed Kroger gasoline station to be built behind the old Hollywood Video Store at 2464 Bardstown Road and the opening of the alley to Trevillian Way. Kroger forecasts they will sell 50,000 gallons of gasoline each week at this station.
Your neighborhood association has voted to oppose this proposed gasoline station for the following reasons: 1. This is an inappropriate site for a gasoline station. There are issues of neighborhood compatibility, traffic, drainage, noise, light, and air and water pollution. 2. There are binding elements agreed to by Kroger in 2001 stating no gasoline stations can be built on the property. 3. There is the possibility of commercial traffic being diverted into the neighborhood on Trevilian Way in direct violation of our Neighborhood Plan and our Executive Summary incorporated into Cornerstone 2020 in 2005. 4. Kroger had the opportunity to buy the old Brenzel's gas station that sat vacant for many years. That property is no longer available. Therefore we feel our neighborhood should encourage Kroger to find a more appropriate location. 5, The Belknap Neighborhood Association encourages pedestrian traffic throughout our Neighborhood Plan that was developed over a multi-year period with the input of residents. The association believes a gasoline station is Kroger's attempt to gain profit through an oil economy similar to BP. This mentality lacks the future vision that enables our neighborhood and Louisville to be a wonderful and special place to live and work. 6. An imperative for Louisville from The Greater Louisville Project's 2010 Competitive City Report states "The people of Greater Louisville should be able to meet their daily needs without owning a car. Values are shifting rapidly -- particularly among younger Americans." It is highly probably with the advent of electric automobiles that gasoline stations may become less necessary in the future. Please support our Neighborhood Association by sending a letter, email or phone call stating your opinion and sharing this email with your friends and neighbors. For more details, please visit out website at www:belknapneighborhood.org | A hearing is schedules for July 22, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at 514 W. Liberty Street. You are encouraged to demonstrate your support for the neighborhood. All emails and letters will be provided to the the committee considering the proposed gasoline station.
